The rat temple is also known as the Karani Mata temple which is situated in the western state of Rajasthan India. The Karani Mata temple is the home of 20,000 rats in one place. which is very famous holy place of goddess Karani Mata the reincarnation of maa Durga(goddess).the temple is nestled in small-town deshnoke which is 30 km far from Bikaner. The temple is home of 20,000 black rats, which live here, the rats are worshipped here.
In the 14th century, Karani Mata live here and performed many miracles during her lifetime. when her youngest son, Lakhan, drowned she ordered god Yama(god of death) to bring his life, but the god Yama said it was unable to do so, but that Karani Mata as an embodiment of Durga, could revive Lakhan’s life. That she is declaring that the member of her family will not die any longer but they would be born as kabas (rats) after the die of any family member of Karani Mata. About 600 families in deshnok claim as the family members of Karani Mata, and that they will be reincarnated as kabas (rats).
One thing the visitor should keep in mind you keep your shoes and slippers outside of the temple. keep in the mind if any rat across from your feet is lucky or if you can see any white rats are very lucky and your all wishes will fulfill this is the faith of people who are visiting the temple of Karani Mata. Another tip, It is a strict rule of the temple if any rat were killed from your feet you have to give solid gold rat to the temple.
